What is Newport like for a group travelling together?

Newport sits on the tidal river Usk, just inside Wales, where the M4 crosses from England and the main line runs west to Cardiff and Swansea. It became a city in 2002, and it is small enough that most trips start within ten minutes of the centre.

The river shapes the whole city. The Usk has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, and at low water its banks are wide slopes of mud. The centre, the station, the castle ruins and the university's riverside campus sit on the west bank, while Rodney Parade and the eastern suburbs lie across the bridges. Choosing the right side of the river for a pickup saves real time.

The Brecon Beacons and Abergavenny

Abergavenny, the market town ringed by the Sugar Loaf, the Blorenge and the Skirrid, is about 30 minutes north up the A4042. Brecon and the main walking routes into the national park, also known by its Welsh name Bannau Brycheiniog, are about an hour away. Walking groups usually want a drop at one trailhead and a pickup at another, which a minibus with a driver makes possible. Car parks at the popular starts fill early on fine weekends, so we plan an early arrival.

Tintern Abbey and the Wye Valley

The ruined Cistercian abbey at Tintern sits beside the river Wye, about 35 minutes east by way of Chepstow. The A466 up the valley is narrow and winding, with steep wooded sides, and is far easier in a minibus than a large coach.

Caerphilly Castle and Blaenavon

Caerphilly Castle, with its moats and famous leaning tower, is about 25 minutes west. Blaenavon, a World Heritage industrial landscape at the head of the Eastern Valley, is about 35 minutes north, with the Big Pit National Coal Museum and the old ironworks. Both are favourites for school history trips. Underground tours at Big Pit have their own rules, so check them with the museum before you book.

The resort and convention centre are on the eastern edge by the motorway, the sports grounds sit across the river, and the heritage sites are in Caerleon to the north and Tredegar House to the west. Caerleon

Remains of the Roman legionary fortress of Isca, about 10 minutes north-east, with an amphitheatre, barracks, the fortress baths and the National Roman Legion Museum. One of the best Roman sites in Britain for a school visit.

Tredegar House

A red-brick 17th-century mansion with gardens and parkland on the west side of the city, close to junction 28, now cared for by the National Trust.

The Transporter Bridge

The 1906 bridge that carries a gondola across the Usk on cables, one of very few left in the world. It has been closed for restoration work, so check whether it is open before planning a visit.

The National Velodrome

The Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, at the sports village east of the centre, used by clubs, schools and track-cycling taster sessions.

Newport Wetlands

Reedbeds and lagoons on the Severn estuary south of the city, run by the RSPB, popular with birdwatching groups and school science trips.

Is Cardiff or Bristol Airport closer to Newport for a group?

Newport is one of the few places in Britain with two airports at a similar distance in opposite directions. Cardiff Airport is about 40 minutes west, past the capital to Rhoose. Bristol Airport is about 50 minutes to an hour east, over the Prince of Wales Bridge and round the south of Bristol. The better choice usually comes down to the airline and the flight time rather than the drive.

Both routes have a weak point. The Brynglas tunnels slow westbound traffic towards Cardiff at peak times, and the approach to Bristol Airport on the A38 is a single road that can queue on summer mornings. For early flights we leave with a margin, and for evening arrivals we track the flight and adjust the pickup.

Which events do Newport groups need transport for?

Sport fills most of the calendar. The Dragons play their home rugby at Rodney Parade, and Newport County share the ground for football through the season. Supporters' clubs travel to away grounds all over Wales, England and beyond, and our sports team travel page explains how we handle away days and kit.

International rugby in Cardiff is the biggest single draw. On Six Nations and autumn test days, Newport fills with supporters heading west, and trains between the two cities are packed. A minibus drops outside the road closures in Cardiff and collects from a point agreed in the morning, which is far easier than queuing for a train home.

Chepstow Racecourse, about 20 minutes east, stages the Welsh Grand National, usually in the days after Christmas. Racegoers from Newport often book a minibus for the day so nobody has to drive. How long does a minibus take from Newport to Cardiff, Bristol and beyond?

The M4 is Newport's lifeline and its biggest headache. A run to Cardiff can take 25 minutes at mid-morning and twice that at the evening peak, mostly because of the two-lane Brynglas tunnels and the stretch of motorway around the city where the speed limit is lowered. For evening events in Cardiff we leave earlier than the map suggests.

Heading east is usually smoother once past the Coldra junction, and the Prince of Wales Bridge puts Bristol within about 35 minutes. The older Severn Bridge on the M48 is the better route for Chepstow, Tintern and Gloucester. High winds can close or restrict the crossings, so we check before long trips in stormy weather.

How does a two-day ICC Wales conference shuttle from Newport hotels run?

ICC Wales is a few minutes from the city centre by road, but delegates do not all want to travel at once, and the approach from junction 24 is busy at the morning peak. A shuttle plan built around the conference programme keeps the registration desk from being swamped and stops anyone missing the opening session.

The details that matter most are the hotel pickup points, the gaps between loops and a named contact on each side. We agree all three with the organiser a week or so before the event, and we send a printable timetable that hotels can hand out at the front desk.

Rodney Parade on match days. The terraced streets around the ground fill up quickly. We drop and collect a short walk away, on the city side of the river where possible.
Caerleon and the villages. Caerleon's centre has narrow streets near the Roman sites. Larger coaches use the main road and agreed stops; minibuses can usually get closer. Send the exact address for home pickups in places like Langstone, Bassaleg or Rogerstone.
