East Midlands Airport is usually 30 to 35 minutes south-west along the A453. Donington Park sits beside the airport, so festival weekends affect airport traffic too. Pickups are planned on streets off the tram routes.
Trent Bridge, the City Ground and Meadow Lane can make the riverside very busy. One of Britain's oldest fairs fills the Forest Recreation Ground and the roads around it.

Nottingham's tram lines run from the station through the Old Market Square and out to the north and west of the city, and buses have priority on several central streets. Between the two, the number of places a vehicle can wait is smaller than the size of the centre suggests, so we always name a street rather than a landmark.
Hotels around the castle, the Park and the canal side by the station usually have the best access for a group with luggage.
The tram network runs through the city centre and out to the suburbs, and its tracks, stops and priority lanes limit where vehicles can wait. Several central streets around the Old Market Square are closed to general traffic. We plan stops on roads a vehicle can legally use, and send each group the exact meeting point before the day.

The A52 and A453 carry most traffic out of Nottingham to the M1, and both slow down in the morning and evening peaks. For airport runs and big events we plan with that in mind, especially on Friday afternoons.
East Midlands Airport is usually about half an hour away along the A453, which makes it the natural choice for holiday flights. Birmingham and Manchester airports are both within about an hour and a half for routes East Midlands does not offer. For early departures, we allow for the M1 junctions near the airport, which get busy from the small hours.

Nottingham's position on the M1, close to Donington Park and within easy reach of Silverstone, makes it a natural starting point for motorsport and festival weekends as well as its own sporting fixtures.
Goose Fair, one of the oldest fairs in the country, fills the Forest Recreation Ground in early October, with very heavy traffic around the site in the evenings. Trent Bridge hosts Test matches and county cricket through the summer, and the City Ground, across the river, is home to Nottingham Forest. Check the official dates before you book.
At Donington Park, about 30 minutes away. Camping groups need space for tents, and the roads around the site are managed on arrival and departure days.
About an hour and a quarter to Silverstone. Very early starts are normal to beat the queues.
International cricket brings big crowds to the riverside, with road closures near the ground.

Nottingham's centre favours vehicles that can reach hotel entrances on narrow streets in the Lace Market and Hockley, so most groups of up to 24 travel by minibus. Coaches suit the stadiums, the airport and longer trips, where proper coach areas exist.
Nottingham's two universities send sports teams all over the country, and their campuses are spread out: the University of Nottingham's University Park in the west of the city, and Nottingham Trent's city-centre and Clifton campuses. A 16 seater with room for kit suits most squads.

Nottinghamshire's own countryside is gentle and easy to drive, while the Derbyshire dales to the west are steeper and busier on fine weekends. We suggest a route that avoids the worst of the queues into the popular villages, and plan the drop-off near the start of any walk.
Sherwood Forest, about 40 minutes north, is the home of the Major Oak and the Robin Hood stories, with forest walks that suit families and school groups. Southwell, a little closer, has a Norman minster and a workhouse museum. Both have proper parking for groups, and they combine well in a single day.
The National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, just east of the city by the Trent, offers rafting, paddleboarding and other activities, and is a popular stag and team-building day. It has plenty of parking and is only about 15 minutes from the centre.

Nottingham packs a surprising number of big venues into a small area. On a summer Saturday it is possible for a Test match, a football friendly and an arena concert to overlap, and the riverside roads and the London Road bridge feel it first. If your trip lands on one of those days, an earlier start is worth it.
Nottingham Castle, on its rock above the city, has been restored with a visitor centre and the caves beneath it, while Wollaton Hall, the Elizabethan mansion in a deer park on the western edge of the city, is a favourite for families and school groups. Wollaton has a large car park; the castle is reached on foot from roads nearby.
