County town of Northamptonshire

What is Northampton like for a group travelling by minibus or coach?

Northampton is one of England's largest towns, sitting on the River Nene a few minutes east of the M1. Its size, its sport and its position halfway between London and Birmingham shape almost every group trip that starts or ends here.

The old centre is compact. The Market Square, one of the largest in England, sits at the top of the hill, with the Guildhall, All Saints Church and the Royal & Derngate theatre a short walk away. Much of the shopping core around the square and Abington Street is pedestrianised, so a minibus sets down on the streets around it rather than at the door.

The M1 runs along the western edge with three junctions serving the town: 15 for the south and Grange Park, 15A for Sixfields and the west, and 16 for Duston and the road towards Daventry. The A45 dual carriageway crosses the town east to west and carries most traffic to Wellingborough and the A14, while the A43 heads south-west to Towcester and Silverstone.

Northampton station sits just west of the centre on the site of the old castle, with trains to London Euston and Birmingham New Street. Many groups combine a train with Northampton minibus hire for the last stretch to a hotel, a wedding venue in the villages or a sports ground.

How long do the usual road journeys from Northampton take?

Approximate times from the town centre in normal traffic. Peak hours and race weekends are slower.

Being so close to the M1 makes Northampton quick to leave in either direction. The slow part of most journeys is the first few miles, from the centre or the eastern estates out to junction 15 or 15A, so we time pickups to avoid the morning and evening rush on the A45 and the Towcester Road.

Which parts of Northampton and the surrounding towns do groups travel from?

Pickups in and around Northampton, grouped the way the roads run.

Groups from the wider county often join a Northampton trip too, and we also cover the neighbouring towns as their own starting points, including Peterborough to the north-east, Leicester up the M1 and St Albans further south.

Which day trips from Northampton work best by minibus?

Northamptonshire has country houses, canal villages and forest walks within half an hour, and bigger days out an hour away.

Althorp, Stoke Bruerne and the Northamptonshire countryside

Althorp, the Spencer family's estate, is about 15 minutes north-west of the town and opens to visitors on set days in the summer, so check the official dates before booking. Stoke Bruerne, a canal village on the Grand Union with a flight of locks and a canal museum, is about 20 minutes south. Salcey Forest, with its treetop walkway, is about 20 minutes south-east, and Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington's family, is about 40 minutes towards Banbury. Lanes to all of these are narrow, so a 16 seater is usually the largest vehicle we suggest.

Cities and attractions within an hour

From Northampton, a full day in a city is easy. Oxford's colleges are about 1 hour 10 minutes away, Cambridge about the same, and Coventry's cathedral and transport museum about 45 minutes. For a shopping day, Milton Keynes is about 30 minutes south, and Rushden Lakes beside the A45 is about 25 minutes east.

How might a Northampton Saints away-day coach trip be planned?

An example for a supporters' group of 30 travelling from Northampton to an away fixture about two hours down the motorway. Real times depend on the kick-off and the ground.

  1. Three weeks before

    Book the coach

Confirm numbers, the kick-off time and the pickup points, for example the station and a stop near junction 15. A 33 seater coach suits a group of this size.

  2. Two days before

    Final check

Check the fixture time has not moved for television, and send the final passenger list and a contact number for the organiser.

  3. Match day morning

    Pickups and off

Collection from the first stop, the second pickup on the way to the M1, and an arrival at the ground well before kick-off.

  4. After the match

    Home to Northampton

The coach waits at the agreed point, leaves once everyone is aboard, and drops at the same stops on the way home.

Which minibus or coach size suits a trip from Northampton?

The vehicles Northampton groups book most, and the journeys they suit.

Most of what happens in and around Northampton suits a minibus: hotel runs, match days, country weddings and the lanes to Althorp or Stoke Bruerne. Coaches come into their own on the M1, for school trips, supporters' clubs and corporate groups from the business parks.

Where can a coach or minibus pick up in Northampton town centre?

Northampton's centre is built on a hill with a pedestrian core and a one-way system around it.

The Market Square, Abington Street and the Drapery are mostly closed to traffic, so a group meeting in the centre needs a pickup on the roads around them. We agree a point with somewhere to stop briefly, then the driver calls when close so the group can walk out and board without the vehicle having to wait.

At Northampton station, the set-down area is busy at peak times and the approach roads are shared with buses and taxis. For larger groups we often pick a nearby side street instead. On Saints match days, the area around Franklin's Gardens on Weedon Road fills up hours before kick-off, so the minibus drops a short walk away and collects at an agreed corner afterwards.

Sixfields is the easiest place in Northampton to meet a coach, with the stadium, the leisure park and the retail park near junction 15A and plenty of space. The County Ground in Abington is on residential streets, so set-downs there are quick and planned in advance.

Which Northampton venues do groups ask to be taken to?

The sports grounds, theatres, campuses and sights that bring most group trips to Northampton.

Northampton's venues are spread around the edge of the centre rather than in one district. A wedding party might stay near Sixfields, a school group might visit the museum and the round church in the centre, and a conference might run at a hotel by junction 15, all on the same day.

Franklin's Gardens

Home of Northampton Saints, the Premiership rugby club, on Weedon Road west of the centre. Match days are busy, so leave plenty of time.

Sixfields Stadium

Home of Northampton Town, the Cobblers, beside a leisure park near junction 15A with space for coaches.

The County Ground

Northamptonshire's cricket ground on Wantage Road in Abington, on residential streets.

Royal & Derngate

The town's main theatre and concert venue, a short walk from the Market Square, with 78 Derngate, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh house, nearby.

University of Northampton

The Waterside Campus by the River Nene, close to the town centre, for open days, graduations and society trips.

Delapre Abbey and the Holy Sepulchre

Delapre Abbey sits in parkland south of the river, and the round Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the oldest buildings in town.

Which airport is quickest from Northampton for a group flight?

Northampton sits between several airports, so the choice usually comes down to the flight and the time of day.

Luton is the closest major airport and the usual choice for European holidays. Birmingham and East Midlands are a similar distance in the other direction, and Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick are within reach for long-haul flights. We plan airport transfers around the check-in time and the traffic on the M1, which can be heavy around Luton on weekday mornings.

Drop-off arrangements and charges at each terminal change from time to time, so check before you travel. For early flights, we suggest collecting from one central point rather than several homes across Northampton.

Luton

About 45 minutes down the M1 to junction 10. See Luton Airport transfers.

Birmingham

About 1 hour via the M1, M6 and M42, or the A45. See Birmingham Airport.

East Midlands

About 1 hour up the M1 to junction 23A. See East Midlands Airport transfers.

Heathrow and Stansted

Both about 1 hour 30 minutes. See Heathrow transfers for terminal notes.

Which events near Northampton need group transport planned early?

Check the official dates each year before you book.

Northampton's busiest weekends are driven by sport. The town has top-level rugby, league football and county cricket, and Silverstone is just down the A43. On the biggest days, the roads around the venues fill hours before the start, so a fixed set-down and a fixed pickup time make the day much easier.

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Silverstone is about 30 minutes south-west of Northampton in normal traffic, but on race weekend the A43 is very busy. Groups staying in Northampton often book a minibus to avoid the car parks and the queues. Check the official dates and the circuit's coach arrangements before you travel.

Saints and Cobblers match days

Saints fixtures at Franklin's Gardens and Cobblers games at Sixfields bring crowds across the west of town. Supporters' groups book minibuses for home games from the villages and for away trips up and down the M1.

Sports team and supporters' travel

Download Festival at Donington

Donington Park is about 1 hour up the M1 from Northampton. Groups going for the weekend need room for tents and camping kit, so size the vehicle for the bags as well as the people.

Shows and graduations

Big shows at the Royal & Derngate and graduation days at the University of Northampton bring families into town at the same time, with limited parking near the venues.

Is one coach or two minibuses better for a Northampton group?

For groups of about 25 to 35, both can work. It depends on where you are going and where you are starting.

Coach hire in Northampton is the obvious choice for a single run down the M1, and it keeps a group together. Two minibuses give more flexibility in the villages and on match days, when the roads near the grounds are closed or crowded.

One coach suits you when

It is a motorway trip. A school trip to London, a supporters' club away day or a corporate run to Birmingham, with one pickup at Sixfields or near junction 15.

The group needs to stay together. One driver, one meeting point and one headcount at each stop.

There is plenty of space at both ends. Business parks, large hotels and major stadiums usually have room for a coach.

Two minibuses suit you when

The destination is down a lane. Country wedding venues, Stoke Bruerne and Althorp are much easier in a minibus.

People start from different places. One minibus can collect from Duston and Upton while the other covers Weston Favell and Moulton.

Groups leave at different times. At a wedding, one vehicle can take the early leavers home while the other waits for the last dance.

How do Northampton weddings and corporate events use a minibus?

Many weddings for Northampton couples take place at country houses, barns and village churches across Northamptonshire, rather than in the town itself. Guests often stay at hotels near the M1 junctions or in the centre, so we run loops between the hotel, the ceremony and the reception, then bring everyone back at the end of the night. See our wedding transport page for how we plan the timings.

Northampton's business parks bring a steady flow of corporate trips. Teams from Brackmills, Moulton Park and Grange Park book transport for training days, client visits, conferences and the Christmas party. Our corporate travel service covers regular shuttles as well as one-off events.

The university also books group travel for open days, field trips and sports fixtures, and many students hire a minibus for a society night out. For schools across the town, our school trip minibus hire page explains what we need to plan a day out safely.
