Saddleworth's calendar is unusually busy for a group of villages, and the big days close roads. When the villages are full, vehicles and drivers are in demand across the whole of Greater Manchester, so an early booking matters more than usual.
Most other demand comes from people heading out of Oldham rather than into it: nights out in Manchester, away matches, airport runs and summer festivals across the north.
Bands travel from village to village across Saddleworth on Whit Friday evening, playing at each contest in turn. Roads in the villages close for the marches, so band coaches follow a set route and timings agreed in advance.

The M60 between Hollinwood and Stockport is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the north-west, and morning peaks can add a lot of time. For early flights we leave a wider margin than the clock suggests, especially on Monday mornings and at the start of school holidays.
For flights only available from Yorkshire, Leeds Bradford Airport is about an hour away over the M62, and Liverpool John Lennon about an hour and ten minutes to the west. Saddleworth groups sometimes find Leeds Bradford the easier drive. Drop-off arrangements at all three airports change from time to time, so check before you travel.
From Oldham town centre the motorway is ten minutes in one direction and open moorland is ten minutes in the other. Most of our planning goes into making sure the right vehicle meets the right kind of road.

The borough stretches from Failsworth on the Manchester boundary to Denshaw near the M62, so a single group can be spread over quite a distance. We usually start at the furthest pickup and work back towards the motorway.

Saddleworth weddings are lovely to look at and awkward to drive. Churches sit on hillsides with little parking, receptions are often down farm tracks, and the evening return has to come back down unlit lanes. Splitting a big group between a coach on the main road and a minibus for the narrow bits often works best.
Tell us early if any guests use wheelchairs or walking aids. Some church paths in the villages are steep and cobbled, and we can plan a drop-off as close to the door as the lane allows.

Closer to home, Dovestone Reservoir above Greenfield is the borough's best-known walking spot, with a level path round the water and steeper routes up to the edges. Glossop is about 35 minutes south through Mossley and Stalybridge, and Edale or Castleton roughly an hour and a quarter from Oldham, depending on the route. The A62 climbs over Standedge to Marsden, about 25 minutes from Uppermill, where the Standedge Tunnel visitor centre sits at the end of Britain's longest canal tunnel. Boat trips are seasonal, so check before you travel. Over the M62, Bradford is about 45 minutes away for curry and the National Science and Media Museum, and Leeds about 50 minutes for shopping and Headingley.
The A628 Woodhead route makes Sheffield about an hour and ten minutes away, through some of the wildest scenery in the Pennines. In winter we may route via the M62 and M1 instead. For a gentler Yorkshire day, Holmfirth is about 35 minutes over Saddleworth Moor on the A635.

Most of the town-centre sights are within a few minutes' walk of each other around the Old Town Hall and Parliament Square, so one drop-off covers most visits. Saddleworth is the exception: Uppermill is the hub, but the museums, churches and walks are spread up the valley.
For away fans, Boundary Park is the usual starting point too. Supporters' groups often meet near the ground, and for evening kick-offs we agree a return time with a margin for the crowd leaving the stadium.

The tram lines through Oldham town centre are the main thing to plan around. Trams run on street track along Union Street, and a vehicle cannot wait on or near the rails. We choose a side street or a stop away from the tracks and send the location with the booking.
In Saddleworth the problem is width rather than trams. Many village roads are lined with parked cars, and coaches cannot turn in some of them. For pickups at houses in the villages, a minibus is often the only practical choice.
