Getting around

How easy is it to move a group around Manchester by road?

Easier than London, harder than it looks on a map. The city centre is compact, but trams, bus gates and one-way loops shape where a vehicle can stop.

Manchester's centre sits inside a ring of fast roads: the Mancunian Way to the south, the inner relief route to the north and west, and Trinity Way along the Salford side. Inside that ring, Metrolink trams run on the street through Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street and St Peter's Square, and several roads are closed to general traffic. A minibus cannot wait on tram tracks or in a bus gate, so pickups are planned for the streets just off them.

The good news is that the city is small. From a hotel in Spinningfields to the Northern Quarter is a short walk, and Piccadilly, Victoria and Deansgate stations are all on the edge of the centre. Most groups are dropped near where they want to be and walk the last few minutes, which is often quicker than trying to reach the door.

Beyond the centre, Manchester minibus hire is about the big destinations: the two football grounds, the arenas, Salford Quays, the Trafford Centre and the airport. Each has its own drop-off arrangements on busy days, and we plan around them rather than guessing.

The Greater Manchester boroughs are part of the picture too. Many of our pickups start in Stockport, Bolton, Bury or Altrincham, where roads are wider and groups can be collected from home.

What shapes most group trips in Manchester?

Metrolink runs on city-centre streets, so pickups are planned for side roads and hotel entrances, not tram routes. [Manchester Airport](/airport-transfers/manchester-airport) is usually 25 to 40 minutes from the centre, depending on the time of day. Old Trafford and the Etihad both close nearby roads; we drop and collect a short walk away.

The Peak District is roughly an hour away for walking groups and pub days. Clean air plans for Greater Manchester have changed over time, so check the current position before you travel.

Which minibus or coach suits a Manchester trip?

The sizes Manchester groups book most, with the trips they suit here.

Smaller vehicles have a real advantage in central Manchester, where hotel entrances on narrow streets and tram routes limit where a coach can wait. For groups of 25 or more, a coach is still the simplest choice for stadiums, the airport and longer trips, because the venues and terminals have proper coach areas.

MediaCityUK at Salford Quays is home to television studios and offices, and business groups often need transfers between the Quays, the city centre and the airport. The roads around the Quays are wider than in the centre, and a minibus can usually wait close to the building entrance.

Which Manchester venues do groups travel to most?

The places that fill our Manchester diary, and what to expect at each.

Co-op Live, the large arena beside the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, has added a second big venue to the same area, so concert and match nights can overlap. When both are busy, the roads around Sportcity are heavily managed, and we plan drop-offs a short walk away and a pickup point agreed before the show.

  • Old Trafford: Football and cricket

Manchester United's ground and, a short walk away, the county cricket ground. Match days close roads around Sir Matt Busby Way and Chester Road.

  • Etihad Campus: Football and concerts

Manchester City's stadium and the Co-op Live arena share the site east of the centre, so a big game and a big gig can mean heavy traffic on the same day.

  • Manchester Arena: Next to Victoria station

Concerts and events on the north side of the centre. We pick up a short walk away to avoid the crowds on Hunts Bank.

  • Manchester Central: Conferences

The convention centre by Deansgate, with a forecourt that suits delegate shuttles.

  • Salford Quays and MediaCityUK: Offices and theatre

Wide roads and car parks make this one of the easiest places in Manchester to collect a group. See Salford minibus hire.

How long does it take to get from Manchester to the airport by minibus?

Most Manchester groups fly from their own airport, but some use Liverpool or Leeds Bradford for a particular route.

Manchester Airport has three terminals, and the drop-off zones for each are separate. Tell us the terminal printed on your booking, and we will take the right approach. Drop-off areas at UK airports often charge vehicles; check the current arrangements before you travel.

Manchester Airport

25 to 40 minutes from the centre via the A5103 or the M56. See Manchester Airport transfers for terminal notes.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport

About 50 minutes to an hour along the M62 and M57. Details on our Liverpool Airport page.

Leeds Bradford Airport

About an hour and a quarter over the M62. See Leeds Bradford.

East Midlands Airport

About an hour and a half down the A6 or M6 and M1. See East Midlands.

Early flights

The M56 and M60 can slow down sharply from about 6.30am. We plan pickups with a margin for both.

Which Manchester events do groups need transport for?

Some of the biggest dates in the north-west calendar. Dates move each year, so check the official dates before you book.

Manchester Pride, usually over the August bank holiday, centres on the Gay Village around Canal Street, with a parade through the city centre. Parklife, the June festival in Heaton Park in the north of the city, draws very large crowds. Road closures and managed pickup areas apply for both, so check the official dates and travel plans first.

Which day trips from Manchester work best by coach?

Manchester sits between the Pennines, the Peak District and the coast. Times are approximate from the city centre.

The Lake District is about an hour and a half up the M6, and a long but rewarding day from Manchester, with Windermere's lake cruises and the villages of Bowness and Ambleside. For larger groups, we plan stops at places with proper coach parking, as many Lakeland roads are narrow.

DestinationRoad time (approx.)Why groups go
The Peak DistrictAbout 1 hourCastleton, Edale and Bakewell for walking groups, caves and pub lunches.
ChesterAbout 1 hourThe walls, the Rows and the racecourse, or a family day at Chester Zoo on the way.
LiverpoolAbout 50 minutesThe waterfront, the Beatles sites and Anfield or Goodison.
BlackpoolAbout 1 hourThe illuminations in autumn, the Pleasure Beach and the tower.
The Lake District1.5 to 2 hoursWindermere and Keswick for a long day or a weekend.
YorkAbout 1.5 hoursThe Minster, the walls and the racecourse, over the M62.

Long days need proper driver breaks. Give us the full plan, including the time you want to be back, and we will check the hours.

How long are popular Manchester group journeys by road?

Rough times from the city centre in normal traffic. Match days and the evening peak add time.

The M60 ring road carries most journeys out of the city, and it is busiest between about 7am and 9.30am and again from 4pm. A trip that takes 20 minutes at midday can take twice that in the peak, so we plan pickup times around the hour of travel, not just the distance.

On match days and big concert nights the roads around the venue fill first, then the approach roads. Leaving a little earlier than feels necessary is the single best way to keep the day relaxed.

The M60 ring road and the motorways that meet it are busy at the morning and evening peaks, and the stretch around the Stockport and Sale junctions is often the slowest. For trips that cross the city, an early start or a mid-morning departure makes a big difference to the journey time.

  • Old Trafford15 to 25 minutes

Down Chester Road. On match days roads close near the ground, so the drop is a short walk away.

  • Etihad Campus10 to 20 minutes

East along Ashton New Road. Event traffic builds an hour before kick-off or doors.

  • The Trafford CentreAbout 20 minutes

Off the M60. Very busy on December weekends.

  • LeedsAbout 1 hour

Over the M62, a common run for stag groups and away fans.

  • SheffieldAbout 1 hour 15 minutes

Across the Snake Pass or Woodhead in good weather, or round by the motorway.

Which towns around Manchester do we collect from?

Greater Manchester is a cluster of towns as much as one city. These are the areas we drive in most.

Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs, from Wigan and Bolton in the west to Oldham and Stockport in the east, linked by the M60 ring road. Many groups gather from several of them, and the M60 makes it straightforward to collect from two or three towns on the way into the city.

Salford and the Quays

How does a Manchester stag weekend with a minibus usually run?

An example plan for 14 friends. Every group is different, and we set the real timings with you.

Saturday daytime activities are often outside the city centre, from go-karting and paintball to a trip to the races at Haydock Park, about half an hour west. A minibus keeps the group together between the hotel, the activity and the evening, and saves the cost and confusion of several taxis.

  1. Friday arrival

Collected from Piccadilly or the airport and dropped at the hotel with the bags.

  2. Saturday activity

Out to a karting track, clay shooting or a brewery tour on the edge of the city, then back to change.

  3. Saturday night

Dropped near the Northern Quarter or Deansgate Locks, with a late pickup agreed in advance.

  4. Sunday home

Hotel to station or airport, with time for a late breakfast.

Getting around Manchester

Can a coach stop on Deansgate?

Deansgate has bus lanes and limited stopping, so we usually collect from a side street or a hotel entrance nearby and tell you exactly where before the day.

Does Manchester have a clean air zone for minibuses?

Plans for a Greater Manchester clean air zone have changed several times. Check the latest local rules before you travel; we confirm how they affect your trip when we quote.

Where can a minibus drop off at Manchester Piccadilly?

Near the station on a nearby side street, a short walk from the entrance. We send the exact spot with your booking.

Events and match days

Can you take us to Old Trafford on a match day?

Yes. Roads around the ground close before kick-off, so the drop-off is a short walk away, and we agree a pickup street for after the final whistle.

Do you run minibuses to Co-op Live and the Etihad?

Yes. The Etihad Campus handles big crowds for football and concerts, and we plan the pickup away from the busiest exits.

Can you take a group to Manchester Pride?

Yes, though road closures in the centre mean the drop-off is planned around the event's published arrangements. See Manchester Pride transport.

Airports and longer trips

How long is a minibus from Manchester city centre to the airport?

Usually 25 to 40 minutes. For early flights we allow extra time for the M56 and M60.

Can you collect a group from several Greater Manchester towns?

Yes. Send every address, for example in Bolton, Bury and Stockport, and we will plan the order and give each pickup its own time.

Can you take a walking group from Manchester to the Peak District?

Yes. Castleton and Edale are about an hour away. Tell us the start and finish points if you are walking a linear route, and we will plan two meeting places.
