The pottery industry gave the city its name and much of its character. Stoke has two professional clubs, and match days affect traffic across the south and north of the city.
Stoke City play at the bet365 Stadium, beside the A50 near its junction with the A500 at the southern end of the city. On match days the slip roads and the approach from Trentham Lakes fill well before kick-off, and the queues out of the car parks afterwards can take some time to clear. Visiting supporters' groups usually want to arrive early and leave promptly, so we agree a drop-off and a pickup point in advance.
Port Vale play at Vale Park in Burslem, in the north of the city, where the streets around the ground are residential and narrow. A minibus copes far better than a coach there, and the driver will set down on a main road a short walk from the turnstiles rather than squeezing into the terraces.

Alton Towers is about 35 minutes east of Hanley, along the A50 and then country lanes through Cheadle or Uttoxeter. The last few miles are narrow, and queues build on the approach in the summer holidays, so an early start makes a real difference. A 16 seater minibus is the usual choice for a group of this size.

The market town of Leek is about 25 minutes north-east on the A53, and beyond it the gritstone ridge of the Roaches and the moorland road towards Buxton. Walking groups often start at the Roaches, where parking along the lane is very limited, so the driver drops the group and waits further back. Stoke-on-Trent station sits in Winton Square, facing the North Staffordshire Hotel, with the A500 running just behind it. The forecourt has space for drop-offs, but it is busy with taxis at train times, so we agree a point on the square or on Station Road and send it with the booking.
In Hanley, the bus station and the pedestrian streets around the shopping centre are closed to private vehicles. For theatre trips and nights out, the driver sets down on the roads around the cultural quarter, close to the Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall, and picks up from the same spot.
Hotels near the A500 and the M6 junctions, including those around Festival Park in Etruria and on the edge of Trentham, have car parks where a minibus can wait. They make the easiest pickups for an early airport run.
