Most Sunderland groups fly from Newcastle, which has the widest choice of holiday and city flights in the region. The drive is short, but the route crosses the Tyne, and an early-morning departure in summer meets other holiday traffic at the airport roundabouts. We usually plan to arrive well before bag drop opens rather than cutting it fine.
Teesside International is worth checking for groups living on the south side of the city, in Ryhope, Doxford Park or Houghton-le-Spring, where the A19 south is the quicker road. For flights that neither airport offers, Leeds Bradford is the next option, a longer run that suits a group with plenty of luggage better than the train would.

Beamish, the open-air museum of North East life, is about 25 minutes west of Sunderland, and the town, pit village and tram line easily fill a morning. Groups often add Durham in the afternoon, another 20 minutes away, for the cathedral and a walk along the Wear. Beamish has dedicated coach parking and large school groups are common, so book the museum entry in advance and tell us your arrival slot.
North through the Tyne Tunnel, Alnwick Castle and its garden are about an hour away, with Bamburgh and the beaches a little further. It is a full day, best started early from Seaburn so the coast road can be enjoyed on the way back. Book castle tickets ahead in summer. Family days out by minibusAbout an hour and a half south, York gives a group the Minster, the walls and the Shambles in a day, or a race meeting on the Knavesmire. Ripon and the Dales are a shorter run down the A1(M). York's centre is closed to vehicles for much of the day, so we drop near the walls and agree a meeting point for the trip home.
