Getting Your Group To The London Marathon

The London Marathon is run each spring, usually in late April, from Greenwich and Blackheath in south-east London to a finish on The Mall by Buckingham Palace. Tens of thousands of runners take part, many raising money for charity, and huge crowds line the route past Cutty Sark, over Tower Bridge and along the Embankment.

Roads along and across the route are closed for most of the day, so runner drop-offs and supporter travel need careful planning.

Marathon Day Drop-Off And Pickup

Start areas

Runners start from areas in Greenwich Park and Blackheath, reached very early.

Road closures

Roads along and across the route close from early morning until the evening.

Charity cheering points

Many charities have cheering points along the route for supporters.

The finish on The Mall

Runners meet families in the reunion area near Horse Guards.

Crossing the route

Vehicles cannot cross the route for much of the day.

Agreed pickup points

Collections are planned away from the closures.

Journey Times On Marathon Day

Central London to Blackheath

About 30 to 45 minutes before the closures, much longer after.

Heathrow to Greenwich

About an hour and a quarter early in the morning.

From Kent

Maidstone is about an hour to Blackheath.

From Essex

Chelmsford is about an hour to an hour and a quarter.

From Birmingham

About two and a half to three hours.

From the finish

Journeys out of central London are slow until the roads reopen.

Planning Marathon Day

Runners need to be at the start very early, and the roads into Greenwich and Blackheath get busy before the closures take effect. Charity groups often book a coach to take runners and supporters together.

After the finish, runners are tired and cold, so a pickup point close to the reunion area but outside the closures is ideal. It may take time to reach the vehicle.

What To Bring

Runners should bring warm layers for after the finish and a change of clothes in the vehicle. Supporters need comfortable shoes, as they may walk a long way between viewing points.
