Parliament, palaces and theatres

Why is Westminster harder to reach by road than it looks on the map?

The City of Westminster packs Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Whitehall, Buckingham Palace, the West End theatres and the grand hotels of Mayfair and Victoria into a few square miles. It also has some of the tightest stopping rules in the country, because security, buses and crowds all compete for the same kerbs.

Around Parliament Square, almost every kerb is either a red route, a bus stop, a security zone or a pedestrian crossing. Barriers line the roads outside the Palace of Westminster, and Whitehall has protected areas near Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence. A minibus cannot simply pull up outside the Abbey's west door or the visitor entrance to Parliament and wait.

Good Westminster minibus hire is therefore about the walk as much as the drive. We set down at the nearest legal point, which might be a marked coach bay, a side street off Victoria Street or a stop on Millbank, and tell the group the exact walk to the door. Pickups are agreed in advance, with the driver arriving at a fixed time rather than circling the square.

Central London has a congestion charge, and the whole of Greater London sits inside an emission zone. The rules, hours and charges are set by Transport for London and change from time to time, so check before you travel. We confirm how they apply to your vehicle and route when we quote.

Which vehicle fits the streets around Whitehall and Mayfair?

The sizes Westminster groups book most, matched to how they move around the borough.

Vehicle size matters more in Westminster than almost anywhere else we cover. A full-size coach can only use marked coach bays and the larger hotel forecourts, while a minibus can stop in many more places and slip into the mews and side streets behind the Mayfair hotels. For groups of up to 16, a minibus usually means a shorter walk at both ends.

School parties and large tour groups still suit a coach, because the Parliament education visits, the Abbey and the museums along the river all run timed group entries, and one vehicle keeps a class together. We plan the set-down at a coach bay and walk the group the last few minutes.

For a hotel group heading out to Heathrow, luggage often decides the size. A party of eight with long-haul cases fits a 12 seater minibus far more comfortably than an MPV, and the driver can still reach most Park Lane and Victoria hotel entrances.

How long does a minibus take from a Westminster hotel to each airport?

Approximate road times from Victoria and the hotels around Park Lane, in normal traffic. Rush hour can add a great deal.

Westminster's hotels sit on the western side of central London, which helps for Heathrow and Gatwick and makes London City and Stansted the longer runs. For early flights we usually leave before the morning rush builds along the Embankment and Park Lane, and for evening arrivals we watch the flight and adjust the pickup.

  • Heathrow AirportAbout 50 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes

West along the A4 and M4, quickest from Mayfair and Knightsbridge side hotels.

  • London City AirportAbout 45 minutes to 1 hour

East along the Embankment and the Highway towards the Royal Docks.

  • Gatwick AirportAbout 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes

South over Vauxhall Bridge and down the A23 and M23.

  • Stansted AirportAbout 1 hour 30 minutes

North-east through the city to the M11, slow at peak times.

Which areas next to Westminster do we also plan trips for?

Westminster groups often start, stay or finish just outside the borough.

Many visitors stay in Westminster but spend a day somewhere quieter, or gather friends from the suburbs before a night at the theatre. One vehicle can do a planned loop of pickups and bring everyone into the centre together.

For anything across the wider capital, such as the stadiums, the O2 or Docklands hotels, our London minibus hire page goes into more detail. This page stays with Westminster itself.

Greater London

The stadiums, arenas and hotel districts beyond Westminster.

Wimbledon

About 45 minutes south-west, for the tennis and the common.

Slough and Windsor

About 1 hour west along the M4, for Windsor Castle and Eton.

St Albans

About 1 hour north, for the cathedral and the Roman city.

Crawley

About 1 hour 15 minutes south, next to Gatwick.

Chelmsford

About 1 hour 15 minutes north-east into Essex.

How long do the short hops inside Westminster really take?

Approximate minibus times between the borough's main stops. Short distances, slow roads.

Inside Westminster, the distance on the map tells you little. Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square is under a mile up Whitehall, yet with traffic lights, buses and the occasional protest it can take longer than walking. We often suggest the group walks one leg and the vehicle meets them at the next stop.

Which day trips out of Westminster suit a group by minibus?

Approximate times from Victoria in normal traffic. Leaving before the morning rush saves a lot.

Visitors who have spent a few days around Parliament and the palaces often want one day out of the centre. Royal Windsor is the most popular choice, but cathedral cities and the south coast are all realistic in a day with a driver.

How does a school trip to Parliament and the Abbey run on the day?

An example for a secondary school group of 45 with a timed Parliament visit. Your entry times decide the plan.

School visits to the Houses of Parliament are booked through Parliament's own education service, with fixed arrival times and security screening similar to an airport. The coach plan is built backwards from that time, with a margin for traffic on the way into Westminster.

  1. Early morning

    Leave school

A 53 seat coach collects from school with a margin for the drive into central London. Groups from outside London often stop once on the way so nobody needs a break during the visit.

  2. Mid-morning

    Set down near Parliament

The coach sets down at a marked coach bay near Millbank or Victoria Embankment, agreed beforehand. The group walks a few minutes to the visitor entrance and queues for security.

  3. Midday

    Lunch by the river

Packed lunches in Victoria Tower Gardens beside Parliament, if the weather allows. The coach waits at its parking place rather than near the square.

  4. Afternoon

    Westminster Abbey

A short walk across Parliament Square for a timed group visit to the Abbey. The Abbey sets its own group arrangements and opening times, so check before you travel.

  5. Late afternoon

    Pickup and home

Collection at an agreed coach bay at a fixed time, with a head count before boarding. Leaving before the evening rush gets the coach out of the centre more quickly.

Ceremony and celebration

Which Westminster events close roads and need transport booked early?

Westminster hosts many of the country's biggest public events. Check the official dates and closures before you travel.

The London Marathon finishes on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace, usually in April. Roads across Westminster close for most of the day, so supporters' groups and charity teams need a drop-off well away from the course and a meeting point agreed in advance.

Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade and The Mall marks the King's official birthday in early summer, and the State Opening of Parliament brings a procession between the Palace and Westminster. Both close Whitehall and The Mall for hours, with large crowds along the route.

Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, in November, closes the government quarter for the morning service and the march past. Veterans' associations and regimental groups often travel together for it, and we plan the drop-off well clear of the security cordon.

New Year's Eve fireworks over the river near the London Eye close bridges and Embankment roads from the afternoon, and many areas need tickets. Groups celebrating in the West End should plan to travel early and be collected well after midnight from a point outside the closures. Our party transport page covers late-night groups.

How do groups get to the West End theatres, Victoria Coach Station and the Mayfair hotels?

Three corners of Westminster that fill most of our bookings, each with its own set-down habits.

The busiest moment of a Westminster evening is when the theatres empty, mostly at about the same time. Shaftesbury Avenue, Haymarket and the streets around Leicester Square fill with taxis, buses and pedestrians, and a vehicle waiting outside the theatre door is rarely possible.

West End theatres

Most of the big theatres around Shaftesbury Avenue, the Strand and Haymarket sit on narrow streets with no stopping at the door. We set down on a nearby road before the show and agree a pickup point a few minutes' walk away for the end of the performance. Victoria has its own theatres too, including the Apollo Victoria and the Victoria Palace, both close to the station. For theatre groups staying nearby, the walk back to the hotel is often shorter than the wait for a vehicle.

Victoria Coach Station

The main terminal for long-distance coaches sits on Buckingham Palace Road, a short walk from Victoria station. Groups arriving by coach with luggage often want a transfer on to a hotel, a station or an airport. Private vehicles cannot use the coach station's own bays, so we meet arriving passengers at an agreed point on a nearby street and send the walking directions with the booking. Gatwick is the usual onward airport from here.

Mayfair and Park Lane hotels

The large hotels along Park Lane and around Grosvenor Square mostly have forecourts or service roads where a vehicle can load. Smaller hotels in the mews streets behind them are tighter, and a minibus is the better choice than a coach. For executive travel between Mayfair, Whitehall and the City, an MPV or a small minibus with a driver keeps a delegation together between meetings.

Churchill War Rooms and the museums

The Churchill War Rooms, under the Treasury off King Charles Street, and Tate Britain on Millbank are both popular with school and society groups. Neither has space for vehicles outside, so the set-down is at the nearest coach bay or side street.

Which Westminster groups book a minibus with a driver?

Schools are the largest single group, visiting Parliament, the Abbey and the museums by the river. Choirs come to sing at Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral, the Catholic cathedral near Victoria, and often travel with music, robes and instruments. Our school trip page explains how we plan for younger travellers.

Weddings in Westminster are often civil ceremonies at the register office or at hotels and private venues in Mayfair and St James's, followed by a reception elsewhere. A minibus shuttle between the ceremony, photographs on the Embankment and the reception keeps guests together. See wedding transport for guest shuttles.

Business visitors to Whitehall departments, embassies in Mayfair and Belgravia, and conferences at venues around Westminster need punctual transfers between hotels and meetings. Our corporate travel page covers delegations and repeat runs over several days.

Cricket supporters heading to Lord's in St John's Wood, at the northern edge of the borough, use a minibus for the run from a central hotel and back after the close of play. Larger groups can use a 24 seat minibus and still stop on the roads near the ground.

Westminster minibus hire questions

The questions groups ask most before a trip to Parliament, the Abbey, the theatres or the hotels.

Where can a coach drop off near Westminster Abbey?

Not outside the Abbey itself. We use a marked coach bay or a nearby side street and agree the short walk to the entrance before the day.

Can a minibus stop on Whitehall?

Only in limited places, and not near Downing Street or the security barriers. We usually set down at the Trafalgar Square end or on a side street.

Can you collect a group from Victoria Coach Station?

Yes. Private vehicles cannot use the coach station bays, so we meet arriving passengers at an agreed point on a nearby street and take them to a hotel, station or airport.

Can you take a school group to the Houses of Parliament?

Yes. Book the visit through Parliament's education service first, then send us the arrival time. We plan the coach around it with a margin for traffic.

Can you pick us up straight after a West End show?

Yes. We agree a pickup point a few minutes' walk from the theatre, as stopping outside the door is rarely possible when the shows finish.

Does a minibus in Westminster pay the congestion charge or ULEZ?

Westminster is inside the central charging zone and the wider emission zone. The rules change from time to time, so check before you travel; we confirm how they apply when we quote.

How long is a minibus from a Park Lane hotel to Heathrow?

Usually about 50 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on the time of day. See Heathrow transfers.

Can you take supporters to the London Marathon finish on The Mall?

Yes, though roads around the finish close for most of the day. We drop well away from the course and agree a meeting point for afterwards.

Can we do a day trip from Westminster to Windsor?

Yes. Windsor is about an hour west along the M4. Leaving before the morning rush gives the group more time at the castle.
